- Highs High-luxe image, convertible option, impressive (for its class) towing capacity.
- Lows Princely pricing, stiff ride, cramped rear seat.
- Verdict A mini Rover for the moneyed, style-conscious set.
Overview
Land Rover's smallest Range Rover, the Evoque, turns heads with its daring exterior styling and has proved such a hit that it spurred other products throughout the lineup to take on a similar look. Although the Evoque was introduced in 2010, it still manages to look fresh and modern, luring moneyed buyers in upscale neighborhoods throughout North America. Its interior is similarly posh, at least for front-seat occupants, and can be optioned heavily to include luxury items such as massaging seats. It doesn't boast the same off-road capability as its larger stablemates nor is it as refined on-road, but it's much easier to pilot through tight city streets than its bigger Rover brothers.
What's New for 2019?
Land Rover isn't changing much on its junior model this year. The InControl Touch Pro infotainment system receives updated software, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now optional, six new colors with contrasting roofs dress up the Evoque's image, and a new gloss-black 18-inch wheel design is a standalone option on SE Premium models. An all-new Evoque will go on sale for 2020.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque starts at $42,795 and goes up to $63,595 depending on the trim and options.
We'd go with the Landmark model—which looks great with its sportier exterior styling featuring glossy gray accents. Opting for the Landmark trim also brings navigation, a panoramic glass roof, and a power-operated rear liftgate with hands-free gesture operation. The Evoque Landmark isn't cheap, but it is well equipped and very stylish. Plus, as with every Range Rover Evoque, all-wheel drive is standard; most of its rivals in this segment make that an optional extra.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Likes: Smooth-running turbo engine, cool pop-up rotary shifter, feels more substantial than the competition.
Dislikes: Firm ride, mediocre braking performance.
Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines are the norm in this class, and the 2019 Evoque's standard unit churns out 237 horsepower; a more powerful version is optional and makes 286 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic transmission handles gearchanges; you select gears using a rotary shift knob that pops up from the center console when you start the engine.
Fans of larger SUVs and crossovers, ironically, will feel at home in the smaller Evoque. It manages to drive like a much larger vehicle thanks to slow steering that, while accurate, requires more input from the driver to change directions than sportier offerings such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class and the BMW X1. The Evoque's ride is firm, and road imperfections make themselves readily known to all occupants. Encounter a twisty road and the Evoque can hold its own, but those looking for something that will more closely emulate a sports car in such a scenario should look elsewhere.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Its wild styling may make the Evoque stand out in traffic, but its fuel-economy estimates certainly don't call any attention to the vehicle—they are only average. Plus, in the real world, its fuel-efficiency claims are difficult to emulate.
Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo
Likes: Modern design, crisp-looking infotainment display, nearly flat load floor with rear seats stowed.
Dislikes: Cramped back-seat space, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto not standard, convertible model offers very little cargo room.
Living up to the Range Rover name isn't easy, but the Evoque distills the lap-of-luxury cabin of its much larger namesake and adds its own spin with a contemporary design. Front-seat passengers will find little to complain about, particularly in upper trim levels that pamper with optional massaging seats; those relegated to the rear seats may find themselves wishing to be in the larger Range Rover Sport—this is especially true in the unique Evoque convertible due to its lack of space.
The Evoque's standard infotainment offerings will assuage only casual users; high-tech drivers are encouraged to upgrade to the optional InControl Touch Pro, which adds a 10.2-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional, as is an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot powered by a 4G LTE data connection.
Despite being one of the larger vehicles in this segment, the Evoque's capability for hauling carry-on luggage barely edged out a win from the more compact GLA-class and the Audi Q3. We fit five of our carry-on suitcases behind the back seat of our Evoque hardtop test vehicle, and with the rear seats folded to their almost-flat position, we stuffed 17 cases inside.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Safety-minded consumers can equip their Evoque with a number of driver-assistance features including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. However, they must first opt for a more expensive trim level such as the Landmark or the HSE, since neither of these features are available on the base SE version. Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have tested the Evoque's safety performance. Key safety features include:
- Available automated emergency braking
- Available lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
With a warranty that barely meets the industry standard, the Range Rover Evoque does nothing to stand out in this category. The Lexus NX may be a better choice for buyers who drive more than the average person, since that model comes with longer powertrain coverage.
- Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- No complimentary scheduled maintenance
