Even though the IIHS doesn't recommend small cars for newer drivers, a few compact models were included in the agency's list, and the Mazda3 is one of the best. A mere 38 miles of electric range may not seem like much now, but the Chevrolet Volt—as a plug-in hybrid or, as General Motors calls it, an extended-range EV—successfully built on the legacy of mild-hybrid hatchbacks like the Toyota Prius. With a 16.5-kWh battery and a total of 344 miles of gas-hybrid range, the Volt is another great choice for those wanting to dive into electric vehicles with a range failsafe. That's not a typo. Subaru's Legacy sedan has been a top IIHS safety pick for nearly a decade now. And it's no surprise either, as Subaru continues to emphasize safety features for those inside and outside of their cars. Subaru's symmetrical AWD is also a must-have for new drivers in slippery winter climates. And the Legacy won't break the bank either, coming in at an average cost of $7800.

Midsize sedans characterize this list, but the Accord is perhaps the most iconic. With deep roots in the US and a fantastic safety track record, the IIHS recommends any Accord from 2013 and up for teenage drivers. With four- and six-cylinder powertrains as well as two- and four-door options, the Accord gives teens a bit more choice in the buying process while also promising a clean bill of reliability to their parents. Kelley Blue Book says the average transaction price for Accords across this vintage is $10,300, but we've seen late models for much less than that.

Like the Honda Accord, the Mazda6 has some history in the US market. Its tall, stylish shape also helps it appeal to younger audiences, though its average price tag of $8500 is a big incentive as well.

Tried and true, the CR-V is an unshakeable part of the American roadway ecosystem. And for good reason, as it's comfortable, spacious, and appropriately powered. Always relying on a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, the CR-V isn't too quick, but it will suffice for everything up to mud puddles. Produced in abundance, used CR-V prices average around $12,000.

If you can pick up a RAV4, you're bound to have a reliable vehicle on your hands.
